When are you actually an adult?

I Learned The Hard Way That 18 Is Not The Parenting Milestone I Expected | Learning[intense_content_section background_type=”color” background_color=”#FCFCF4″]

Starting Point. Discuss the questions below.

When is the age of majority in your country?

What is the drinking age?

What is the smoking age?

What is the driving age?

What is the voting age?

Do you agree with these legal age limits? Why (not)?

Focus on Vocabulary. Explain the meaning of the following words.

to lower

consensus

coming of age

to prune

to weed out/away

myelinated

Focus on Comprehension. Answer the questions below about the video.

  1. What’s one way scientists have attempted to determine adulthood?
  2. Gray matter consist of cells and connections that facilitate __________
  3. White matter connections are __________, enabling fast and far-range communication to different parts of the brain.
  4. What factors make 18-21 year olds act younger?
  5. What factor determines when a person arrives at adulthood?
  6. What is the difference between white and gray matter?
  7. Why do neuroscientists suggest that there are “waves” of maturity?
  8. Why do some scientist argue that judicial systems should expand juvenile courts to the age of 21?

Focus on Listening. Watch the video. Read the transcript below if necessary.

Focus on Debate.

Consider the following statement:

While one can legally be considered an adult at the age of 18, age is often just a number. Brain development, maturity and responsibility are also determining factors in adulthood. Although 18 is considered the age at which a person grows up legally, many people believe that at this age one is not developed or mature enough to make responsible decisions. The human brain doesn`t fully develop until the age of 25, and the prefrontal cortex — which helps control impulses, solve problems, regulate emotions, and organize behavior — is not semi-developed until a person reaches the age of 18.

Use these expressions to show your opinion:

Listing and giving examples:

  • I think there are three important things to remember when ……..
  • The most important thing is …. Because ….
  • For example, …..
  • Another thing which is important is ……………….
  • For instance, ……
  • Finally, you should …….

Giving a tentative opinion:

  • I imagine that …
  • I suppose that ….
  • I guess that ….
  • It could be that …
  • It might be that ….
  • It’s a possibility that ….
  • It’s very / quite possible that …..
  • It’s likely that ……

Choose one of the following statements and discuss if you agree or disagree. What are the pros and cons?

  1. The legal age of majority should be 21 because young people are too immature to make important life decisions.
  2. The voting age should be increased to 25.
  3. The voting age should be lowered to 16.
  4. People under 30 should not be allowed to stand for election /run for public office.
